Trail #3 – A Mountain of a Greek God

What you'll do

The Mountain of Zeus (Zas in local Greek argo) holds the status of the highest mountain in the Greek Cyclades (1004m). The mountain holds its name from the Greek mythology god Zeus – the god of the sky and king of the Olympian gods, since it was believed to be his birthplace.

The route starts from the little church of Agia Marina and while ascending the trail route you come across to an ancient greek old inscription that translates to “Mount of Zeus, Protector of the Sheep” (ΟΡΟΣ ΔΙΟΣ ΜΗΛΩΣΙΟΥ).

The route continues to the west from where you can see the split landscape by high stone walls, an old way (but proven) way to indicate lines of property. Starting to reach to the summit, the route turns to the southeast having a long gradual incline while in the last hundred meters, the trail path turns to limestone.

Once you reach to the summit, enjoy the breathtaking 360 view of the Aegean Sea and the islands near to Naxos. If you are lucky enough and the sky is clear, the view can reach until Santorini island
